Radiant Heat FAQ

Can radiant heating systems work in any home?

Yes, we can design and install radiant heating systems for just about any building. Although in existing homes that are not being remodeled, it may make sense to do a combination of radiant heat for the first floor, and conventional radiators or radiant panels on the second floor.

What rooms will benefit the most from a radiant heating system?

Generally the main living areas, dining rooms, family rooms, living rooms, kitchens and baths. These are the rooms that we spend the most time in, either sitting or standing in one spot for extended periods of time.

Why is radiant heat so comfortable?

8o% of our nerve endings that sense heat are located from our waist, down to our feet. The temperature of the air in a radiant heated room is always warmer at that level than it is at ceiling height. This is the exact opposite for any other type of heating system. Hot air and conventional baseboard radiators also create convection currents in a room. This current causes swirling dust and creates drafts. This will also increase outside cold air infiltration into a room, even when the thermostat in the room says it's warm, you may still feel uncomfortable.

How much fuel will a radiant heated building use compared to other types of heating systems?

Depending on the other type of heat you are comparing it to, it will cost approximately 30% less to heat a building with a radiant floor heating system. And the other benefit that even outweighs this difference is, that you will be more comfortable while spending less on your heating bill.

Can I use my existing hot water heating system with a radiant floor?

Absolutely! The radiant floor will require much lower water temperatures than your conventional radiators. We control the water temperature supplying the radiant floor by adding an automatic mixing valve that will adjust the temperature to supply just the amount of heat that is needed.
If you have an older heating system, you may want to consider replacing it with one of our newer, more efficient systems. If a boiler is old enough to vote, chances are that it is time to replace it.

Can radiant floors work with carpeted floors?

yes, and they can work with a variety of carpets and carpet pads. The only carpets that may not work as well are thick shag type carpets, or carpets made of wool. The best pads to use are the rubber "slab" type or rubber "Waffle" type pads. The most important consideration is how much heat the room will need on the coldest days of the year, and if the radiant floor will produce enough heat with a given carpet installed over it. If a thick rug and pad are desired and the radiant has a hard time keeping up on the coldest days, then the room in question may need a form a supplemental heat to assist the radiant floor during those times. The computerized heat loss programs that we use will tell us when those conditions will happen and how much extra heat we will have to supply.
